The Department of Basic Education (DBE) recently announced the implementation of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) for its fifth phase. With applications opening soon, the department unveiled the payment plans for participants.

Phase 5 of the BEEI programme will target unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34, who will not turn 35 before the end of March 2026, to assist and support teaching and learning. This fifth phase of the programme aims to create at least 200,000 job opportunities for unemployed youth in South Africa.

How Much Phase 5 Teaching Assistants Will Earn

The DBE confirmed that phase 5 teaching assistants will receive a monthly stipend of R4000. In addition, they will also receive R30 worth of mobile data.

Teaching assistants will receive six months of practical experience during their placement. They will also have access to mentorship and coaching for the duration of their six-month placement.

The DBE stated that youth will gain several hard and soft skills. Hard skills include writing and communication skills, record management, planning, organizing, and reporting, data analysis, and public speaking. Soft skills include time management, collaboration, conflict resolution, problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability.

It was also reported that the education department has spent R100 million to create exit opportunities for youth once they complete their six-month contract.

Applications for teaching assistant positions in Phase 5 will open on 22 April 2025.

Youth must register on the SAYouth.mobi platform for teaching assistant jobs. The DBE confirmed that the SAYouth.mobi platform will be the only recruitment source for 2025 teaching assistants.

The DBE will be working with SAYouth.mobi for the recruitment of young people. This will be the only source for recruitment.
