The Department of Basic Education has announced that the application period for Phase four of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) in the Basic Education Sector opens on 26 September 2022. It is said that this application period will run for three weeks until 16 October 2022.

Applicants that will qualify are those who are aged 18-34, living within 5km of an urban school or within 30km of a farm/rural school and have never participated in the previous phases of the initiative.

In a statement, the Education Department has confirmed:

Both the Education Assistants and General Assistants will receive R4 081.44 per month less than 1% UIF contribution.

According to the DBE, Education Assistant opportunities are available for those who have a minimum of matric but preference will be given to those with tertiary qualifications, especially in Education.

They will then be categorised as reading champions, e-cadres, curriculum assistants and Care & Support Assistants.

Those who don’t have matric will be absorbed as General School Assistants, then will be divided to either work as sport & enrichment assistants or as handymen/handywomen.

Applications are done online on the SA Youth data free website, and should you experience some internet issues, you should attempt again later, as long as it is within the application period.

It is said that interviews will be held in November & December 2022 and the department will communicate interview days with applicants. Contracts of the participants of the third phase of this initiative ended on 31 August 2022.
