The Department of Basic Education (DBE) confirmed that it had managed to create more than 850 000 employment opportunities for unemployed youths across all nine provinces of the country to work as teacher assistants.
This has been done through the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) which will see the end of its third phase on 31 August 2022 and the Education Department has clarified that there won’t be an extension of this phase.
However, the department has announced a new chapter for the government initiative.

Applications for PYEI will open next month.
The department has opened a pre-application window that will be open for six weeks, from 5 September 2022 until 16 October 2022.
Within the three weeks, applicants have been urged to prepare themselves by gathering all documents and information that will be required in the application. Whilst applications will officially open on 26 September 2022.
Mhlanga has advised qualifying individuals to start preparing now by registering on the SAYouth which the department has indicated is zero-rated and does not require data.As part of the qualifying criteria, you have to be a young South African between the ages of 18 and 34.
