Maintaining mental health during the matric year is essential not only for good performance, but also for long-term well-being.  We asked Pertunia Nkomo-Mofokeng from Rosebank International for her advice for Matrics. 

As the second term of 2026 kicks off, the real work of Matric begins in earnest. This is not a year where performance suddenly matters in September, but rather a full-year campaign with the June exams the first major checkpoint that truly counts, an education expert says.

Matric is a year filled with excitement and responsibility - but there is also the pressure of maintaining strong academic performance. 

A matric certificate is the final high school or secondary qualification you can get in South Africa before studying further at college or university. If you didn't complete the National Senior Certificate, you may have received an equivalent qualification.

Matric can be a challenging year, even more so when you don’t achieve the marks you’ve hoped for. But the good news is, the results you got in your exams don’t have to be final because the chance to rewrite exists.  

The Western Cape MEC for Education has praised a school in his province that went on a six year journey, improving their Matric pass rate from 40% to 100%.

 

If you did not pass your National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams or you are perhaps unhappy with your results, you may apply to have your exam paper re-marked or re-checked.

Matrics across the country have received their final results and discovered if they have bachelor, diploma or higher certificate passes. But this year's class are going to have to wait longer than usual to find out if they have secured a place at university.

There was much excitement in the room as the Basic Education Minister read out the top provincial performers for the 2025 Matric exams - with some familiar names battling it out for top spot. 

As well as celebrating the success of the top Matric students in the country, the Basic Education Department also compiles data on Matric exam performance of all schools in the country. The information is shared with the public in an annual report.

There was a modest increase in the national Matric pass rate for 2025 - but it did push the results to set a new record for South Africa's school leaving exams. It was also top prize for KZN as their Matric learners were the top performers in 2025.

Results are now available for Matric learners who wrote the IEB papers in 2025. Here's how IEB learners can collect their final Matric results. 

Independent school learners excelled again in the latest matric results, even though the performance was slightly lower than in previous years.
