South Africa’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF) is a structured system that organises and recognises all nationally approved qualifications and part-qualifications. It was established to ensure that education and training in South Africa are integrated, transparent and aligned with the skills needs of the country.
The NQF is overseen by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in terms of the National Qualifications Framework Act. Its main purpose is to create a single, coordinated framework for learning achievements, making it easier for learners to move between different education and training pathways.
The framework consists of ten levels, ranging from basic schooling to advanced postgraduate qualifications. Each level reflects increasing complexity of learning, skills and knowledge. This allows employers, institutions and learners to clearly understand the value and outcomes of a qualification.
The NQF aims to support lifelong learning by promoting access, mobility and progression within education and training. It also helps to ensure the quality and relevance of qualifications through nationally agreed standards.
By linking schools, colleges, universities and workplace-based training, the NQF plays a key role in developing skills, improving employability and supporting economic and social development in South Africa.
What Qualification Is Equivalent To Matric?
If you want to do a Bachelor's degree at a university, then you need to have matric certificate.
The South African matric certificate is equivalent to an NQF level 4 qualification. The NQF 4 qualification is the forth level of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). A matric certificate is needed to apply for university study further.
This is the standard for entry into undergraduate studies at South African universities. You can also use your matric certificate to apply for jobs in the public service, but in some instances it is also required that you have a bachelors degree.
