Social grant beneficiaries who are still using South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Gold Cards have been urged to switch to the new Postbank Black Cards before the deadline.

Postbank has warned that there are only two grant payment cycles remaining before SASSA Gold Cards stop working. Beneficiaries are encouraged to replace their cards as soon as possible to avoid delays and long queues closer to the deadline.

Failure to replace a SASSA Gold Card before 31 August 2026 could result in beneficiaries being unable to access their social grant payments using the old card.

SASSA Gold Card Deadline Will Not Be Extended

Postbank has made it clear that the deadline for replacing SASSA Gold Cards will not be extended.

“The window period for replacing SASSA Gold Cards is closing fast and we are concerned that many beneficiaries may think that they still have sufficient time, or the period will be extended.

“Anyone without a Black Card after the deadline will need to first obtain a new card before they can access payments,” Postbank Chief Commercial Officer, Thami Cele, said.

Cele urged social grant beneficiaries to take advantage of the remaining time available and collect their new cards before the deadline arrives.

How To Replace Your SASSA Gold Card

The replacement process is free and can be completed at designated Postbank service points located within participating retail stores across South Africa.

Postbank has reminded beneficiaries of the following important information:

  • Replacing a SASSA Gold Card with a Postbank Black Card is completely free of charge.
  • Existing Gold Cards will stop functioning after 31 August 2026.
  • Beneficiaries must present a valid South African ID or temporary ID when collecting a new card.
  • Postbank Black Cards can be collected at participating Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores.
  • Beneficiaries can dial 120355# to locate their nearest card collection site.
  • Cards may be collected from any province, regardless of where the SASSA grant was originally approved.
  • The Postbank Black Card works immediately after collection, and beneficiaries do not need to visit a SASSA office once they have received their new card.
  • Any remaining balance on a beneficiary’s Gold Card will automatically be transferred and reflected on the new Black Card.

Beware Of SASSA Card Replacement Scams

Postbank has also warned beneficiaries to remain alert to scams during the card replacement process.

Beneficiaries should ensure that any card they receive clearly displays the word "Postbank" on the front.

According to Postbank, if the card does not have Postbank branding, it is likely a scam.

The bank also stressed that no forms are required when collecting a legitimate Postbank Black Card. Beneficiaries who are asked to complete or sign any forms should not accept the card and should report the incident immediately.
