The South African Postbank (SAPO) confirmed that Sassa gold cards will remain valid after 31 May 2025. This echoes the statement released by Sassa earlier this week announcing the indefinite extension of the validity of the cards.
Postbank is pleased to inform social grant beneficiaries that Sassa Gold Cards will continue to work beyond 31 May 2025.
This extension announcement means that gold cards will remain valid, and beneficiaries can continue using them as normal to access their grant payments.
Sassa Gold Cards will continue to work across all payment systems, including ATMs and POS machines.
Postbank Black Card Rollout
In the statement released by Postbank, they indicated that grant beneficiaries will still be transitioned to black cards. However, they did not provide an explanation for why the rollout of Postbank black cards was suspended last week.
As the Gold Cards will continue to work and all beneficiaries can continue to use those cards and their Black Cards to access payments, Postbank notifies the beneficiaries that it has put a temporary suspension on the distribution of new Black Cards at its sites until further notice.
Nikki Mbengashe, Postbank CEO, confirmed the agency's intention to transition Sassa gold card users to the black card.
In keeping with our commitment that we made-that Postbank will ensure that no beneficiary will be left with no access to their grants and that there will be no disruptions in payment of grants-Gold Cards will continue to work until every beneficiary is transitioned to the new black card.
Postbank black cards also remain valid, and beneficiaries who have already transitioned to the new payment option will be unaffected.
This, however, has no impact on anyone who currently has a Postbank Black Card, as that card will continue to work as per normal.
For several months, grant beneficiaries using Sassa gold cards have faced uncertainty regarding the validity of their cards. Last year, Sassa announced plans to replace these with new Postbank black cards.
Initially, the agency said that gold cards would remain valid until all beneficiaries were upgraded to the Postbank black cards. However, this stance changed earlier this year when Sassa announced that gold cards would expire at the end of February 2025.
Following calls from stakeholders, an extension to the validity was granted and cards were set to expire at the end of March 2025. This deadline came and went, prompting another extension to the end of May 2025.
During this time, Postbank was under pressure to issue new black cards to around 3 million grant beneficiaries. However, the agency faced criticism for inefficiency in the rollout process and the anxiety it caused among beneficiaries.
In April 2025, the issuance of new Postbank black cards came to an abrupt halt when the rollout was suspended. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) instructed Postbank to ensure that Sassa gold cards continue functioning and that all transactions made using them are honoured.
Sassa has expressed confidence that all beneficiaries will continue to receive their grants and noted that a new expiry date for gold cards will be announced in due course.
The indefinite extension of Sassa gold card validity brings relief to many grant beneficiaries who were unable to upgrade to a Postbank black card.
