After it was revealed that the PYEI has been extended, many people want to know when phase 5 of teaching assistant jobs will be open for applications. An update has been provided by the education department.

A programme that created more than one million job opportunities has reached the conclusion of its forth phase. While there is no official decision on whether the programme will continue in the future, the education department is urging youth not to apply for placement.

Teachers play a critical role in shaping the country’s future as they educate the country’s next generation. However, a looming teacher shortage and declining working conditions could be diluting the noble profession.

More than one million employment opportunities were created through the implementation of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI). While the programme has made a significant contribution to combatting youth unemployment, its implementation is set to come to an end.

Phase 4 of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), particularly the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), is currently underway according to the Basic Education Department. This sees unemployed youth take on the role of teacher assistants and general school assistants.

Due to a high unemployment rate countrywide, young South Africans are typically left with no choice but to accept any type of employment that comes their way. However, since 2020, the South African Government has established several initiatives in an effort to ensure that the unemployment rate begins to decrease.

Although many young South Africans leave school and pursue qualifications at tertiary institutions, more than half of the youth remain outside the labour market. The government has various plans in place to deal with this issue.

South Africa’s climbing youth unemployment rate has long been an issue, but with the introduction of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative, some of these worries have been alleviated. The Department of Basic Education reports that since its implementation, the programme has yielded some positive outcomes.
