The Education Department takes pride in the significant number of young people that have been placed in three phases of its Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), since the initiative kicked-off on 1 December 2020.

According to the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the participants of the initiative had been receiving a monthly stipend of R4 081.44 per month, whilst making a 1% Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contribution.

Some of the participants might be unemployed currently, entitling them to receive their UIF contributions.

Recently, the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department made an announcement, clarifying:

The submission will be handled by the department itself.

KZN Education has assured former teacher assistants that the process of submitting their information to the Department of Labour will be completed by 31 October 2022.

It is said that the UIF payment can only be claimed if the former teacher assistant is currently unemployed.

Fortunately, during their employment period the teacher assistants received informal and formal training by the Education Department, providing the youth with an opportunity to gain skills and experience that they will use in their prospective jobs.

Currently, the department has opened applications for its recruits for the fourth phase of the PYEI.

Applications are done online, and should applicants experience some internet issues, they have been advised to try again later, as long as it is within the application timelines.
