The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is currently in the process of paying out the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to qualifying applicants for the current month. However, the agency has also introduced a new appeals process through which applicants can ensure that they have access to the grant.

The new R350 grant appeals are administered by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance (ITSAA) and are intended exclusively for SRD grant beneficiaries, and allows you to have your SRD application reassessed if it was rejected.

What is the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant and what is an appeal?

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) or R350 grant from Sassa refers to the Special COVID-19 grant, temporarily introduced as an emergency grant by the South African government, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news is that the R350 grant is now a permanent feature of the government's social support.

The SRD grant provides a monthly payment of R350 to eligible individuals who were not receiving any other form of income or social grants.

It aims to provide temporary financial assistance, from the South African government, to those who were unemployed, unable to work, or faced financial hardship due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown measures. The country's most vulnerable citizens receive social grants.

To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants have to meet certain criteria set by Sassa, including income thresholds and citizenship requirements. Make sure that you submit all the updated and important details relevant to the R350 grant; you can submit your application online on the SRD platform.

How Do I know If My R350 Appeal Is Approved?

The application process involves submitting relevant documents and information provided to Sassa for verification through the Department of Social Development and Home Affairs.

An appeal application is what a Sassa grant applicant can submit if they want their grant application reassessed, if it was rejected the first time.

Essentially, Sassa's appeals process provides an opportunity for applicants who believe that their permanent grant applications were unjustifiably declined to reconsider their application, if the original decision was to reject the application.

Sassa will also provide you with a reason as to why your application was not successful. You will know if your appeal is approved when you hear back from the appeal tribunal. This will usually be via a message to you cellphone number, or could be a message to your account on the Sassa website.

How Long Does SASSA Appeal Take?

In terms of how long you have to wait before you receive feedback regarding the outcome of your successfully submitted appeal application, Sassa has stated that the Independent Tribunal will inform you of your appeal status electronically, via a confirmation message, within a period of 60 - 90 days from lodging of the appeal.

You can keep track your appeal status in the meantime, but keep in mind, the appeal status process may take some time on Sassa's side as there are millions of applicants that have also submitted SRD grant appeals.

So of course the most important question you will have is how long does a Sassa appeal take? - and hopefully it will be a fairly smooth process. However some people do have to wait longer than others and you should track your Sassa status check appeal to keep on top of the process.

It takes a while to get through every applicant's appeal application.

R350 grant applicants can submit their application appeals by following these steps. This is how the Sassa status check appeal process will work.

Sassa Status Appeal Approved

The outcome you will be looking for is to have your Sassa status appeal approved. That means that they have accepted your application and appeal and you will be receiving the grant again.

If you appeal is approved then your payment will be authorised again and you should get your payment at the next payment date.

How To Submit R350 Grant Appeal Under New Rules

  1. Visit srd.dsd.gov.za
  2. Click on the green bar that says 'click here to lodge an appeal or check appeal status'
  3. Enter your ID number
  4. Enter your cell phone number
  5. Click 'send pin' and wait for the SMS which will contain the verification pin
  6. Enter the pin and click 'submit'
  7. Select the month you are submitting an appeal for
  8. Select the drop down arrow and choose the reason for your appeal
  9. Click 'submit'

This, according to Sassa, applies to all appeals from April 2022 and onwards. Even if the applicant has submitted an appeal prior to this period on the old SRD website, Sassa requires eligible South African citizens or others who qualify but have been rejected to appeal again on the new website. The appeal process for the SRD grant is usually very efficient.

The ITSAA merged its procedures with those of Sassa, which then resulted in a minimal appeals process because the Independent Tribunal already had data from Sassa.
