The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) in the Basic Education Sector strives to provide young people in South Africa with the opportunity to gain access to the job market and the education teaching system. The initiative provides jobs to young people between the ages of 18 and 34 years old.

Currently, the fourth phase of the PYEI is underway. All of the participants currently in the programme are encouraged to complete the online compulsory training sessions.

The training sessions may be accessed through the PYEI Orientation Training system. The system was introduced by the DBE.

Participants should take about 10 hours to complete the online training. However, the training can be done in their own time.

They are encouraged to take it lesson by lesson. Once they have completed all the lessons, they will receive a certificate.

Most of the lessons will end with a quiz to help the participants think about and remember what they have learnt. Participants are encouraged to have a notebook with them to take notes.

Depending on the participant’s learning style, they may make use of:

  • Drawings
  • Summaries
  • Mind maps.

More than 200 000 jobs were provided through the initiative. Some were appointed as education assistants and others were appointed as general school assistants.

Teaching assistants are placed at no-fee paying schools from February to April 2023. These participants receive a monthly stipend of R4 081,44 per month for the work they do.
