The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has congratulated two learner teams from Limpopo who are representing South Africa at the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Grand Finale in Geneva, Switzerland.
The international robotics competition is taking place at the Palexpo International Exhibition and Convention Centre, bringing together young innovators from around the world.
Limpopo Schools Reach Global Robotics Competition
The two South African teams competing in Switzerland are:
- Robo-Kidz from Mashupye Tladi Primary School.
- Roborise from Bokamoso Secondary School.
Both teams secured their place in the international competition after successfully progressing through the local, provincial and national rounds of the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge.
Coding And Robotics Education Driving Learner Success
According to the Department of Basic Education, the learners' achievement demonstrates the positive impact of continued investment in coding and robotics education.
The department has approved and gazetted the Coding and Robotics Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and has been implementing the curriculum through phased pilot programmes since 2021.
The programme equips learners with computational thinking, problem-solving, innovation and digital technology skills while preparing them for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Mathematics, Science And Technology Grant Supports Learners
The DBE said the success of the Limpopo teams has been supported by the province's implementation of the Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Conditional Grant.
The grant funds several initiatives, including:
- Coding and robotics programmes.
- Learner enrichment activities.
- Teacher development.
- Laboratory resources.
- Technical education.
Approximately 90,000 learners benefit from the grant each year through science camps, Olympiads, science fairs, competitions and international opportunities that promote innovation and excellence.
DBE Commends Learners' Achievement
Acting Director for Communications Terence Khala said the learners' success highlights the importance of investing in future-focused education.
“These learners are highlighting the best of South African education on the global stage. Their success proves what is possible when we invest in innovation, quality teaching and meaningful opportunities that allow young people to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.
“As the Department of Basic Education, we are still committed to expanding access to coding and robotics and strengthening STEM education so that every learner can thrive in a rapidly changing world,” Khala said.
The department also congratulated the educators, school leadership, parents, the Limpopo Department of Education and all partners who supported the learners throughout their journey.

As the Department of Basic Education continues rolling out Coding and Robotics across South Africa's schooling system, it believes achievements such as these demonstrate the country's commitment to developing digitally skilled, innovative and globally competitive learners.
The department wished both Limpopo teams every success as they compete against young innovators from across the world while proudly representing South Africa on the international stage.
