On Monday this week, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) officially opened its applications for phase 4 of its Presidential Youth Employment Initiative's (PYEI) teaching assistant initiative. All the more reason for young people across the country to submit their applications on the SAYouth.mobi platform.

However, an equally important point to note is the application closing deadline, which is on Sunday, 16 October 2022, which essentially gives applicants three weeks to apply. This is crucial for applicants to keep in mind that the education department clarified that no late applications will be considered.

A total of more than 250 000 open positions for general or education assistants in schools will be made available by the department. The minimum criteria for applicants for teaching assistant positions is a matric certificate, although those with university education credentials, particularly those in education, will be given preference. Appplicants don't however need to have Matric if they're applying for a general school assistant position.

Additional requirements include being a South African resident aged between 18 and 34 years old, living within 5km of an urban school or within 30km of a rural/farm school as well as being anyone who did not participate in any of the previous Phases.

The orientation and online training for selected candidates will take place in December 2022 and during the first two weeks of January 2023 and work will then begin in February.
