Students who have not yet applied for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding for the 2027 academic year have only a few days left to submit their applications. The application window closes on 31 October 2026, and prospective students are being urged not to wait until the last minute.

NSFAS applications opened on 18 September 2026. According to figures recorded on the scheme's dashboard on 19 October, a total of 868,626 applications had been received.

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has encouraged prospective students, particularly those currently in Grade 12, to apply before the deadline.

NSFAS Receives More Than 868,000 Applications

The latest NSFAS application figures show strong demand for financial assistance among prospective university and TVET college students.

Of the 868,626 applications recorded, 800,382 came from prospective university students, while 68,244 were submitted by applicants planning to study at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.

The dashboard also showed the following applicant breakdown:

  • Female applicants: 616,558 (70.98%).
  • Male applicants: 252,068 (29.02%).
  • SASSA beneficiaries: 653,778.
  • Non-SASSA applicants: 214,848.

With the closing date approaching, students who still need to apply should complete the process as soon as possible.

Minister Urges Grade 12 Learners to Apply for NSFAS

Manamela has specifically encouraged Grade 12 learners who plan to pursue further education in 2027 to submit their applications before the deadline.

“I want to take this opportunity to call on those, especially those who are doing Grade 12, to apply now, and not wait for the 31st of October when the applications close. Don’t pay anyone to apply for NSFAS,” Manamela said.

NSFAS funding helps eligible students access higher education at public universities and TVET colleges. Prospective students are encouraged to use the official application channels rather than relying on third parties.

How to Apply for NSFAS Funding for 2027

Students can submit their 2027 NSFAS applications through the official NSFAS website at www.nsfas.org.za or by using the official NSFAS mobile application.

Applicants should ensure that all information provided is accurate and complete. They must also submit any required supporting documents to help prevent delays in processing their applications.

Students who have already applied should keep track of their application status through official NSFAS channels.

NSFAS Warns Applicants Against Scams

NSFAS has warned prospective students to be cautious of fraudulent social media accounts and individuals who claim they can help secure funding in exchange for payment.

The scheme does not require applicants to pay someone to submit an application, and students should be wary of anyone promising guaranteed NSFAS funding.

Applicants should only use official NSFAS platforms and avoid sharing personal information with unauthorised individuals.

With the 31 October 2026 deadline fast approaching, students who intend to apply for NSFAS funding for the 2027 academic year should submit their applications promptly and ensure that all required information is provided.
