The Department of Basic Education (DBE) revealed that 202,000 job opportunities are available in the fifth phase of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI).

Applications for teaching assistant jobs opened on Tuesday, 22 May 2025, and by 6 PM, more than 1.1 million applications were submitted on the SAYouth.mobi platform. This is despite the SAYouth.mobi website crashing under the pressure of the Teachers Assistant Applications.

The DBE says more than 222,700 applications were submitted by unique applicants. These applicants can apply for multiple opportunities.

Youth Encouraged To Continue Applying

Despite SAYouth receiving five times as many applications as the number of available jobs, youth can still submit teaching assistant applications.

Teaching assistant jobs are not provided on a first come, first served basis, as applications are evaluated against set eligibility criteria.

Phase 5 Teaching Assistant Job Requirements

Education assistants require a matric qualification, while general education assistants do not require a matric.

Youth can apply to multiple schools as long as they are within 5 KM of their home. The application radius is 30 KM for schools in farm and rural areas.

The programme will prioritise applications from youth pursuing part-time, distance, or online teaching undergraduate degrees for work-integrated learning opportunities. Prioritisation will also be extended to candidates holding NQF Level 6 or 7 qualifications.

How To Create A CV For Teaching Assistant Jobs

The DBE is encouraging all eligible applicants to apply as soon as possible. Applications will close on 9 May 2025. This gives youth a short period of time to apply for teaching assistant jobs.

Successful teaching assistant applicants will receive a monthly stipend of R4,000.00 for six months, along with R30 for data. This programme targets youth aged 18–34, specifically those who will not turn 35 before the end of March 2026.
