With over half of South Africa’s population living below the poverty line, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has become an essential stream of income for many disadvantaged citizens.
There are a number of permanent grants that can be applied for, which include: the Disability Grant, the Older Person’s Grant, the War Veteran’s Grant, the Foster Child Grant, and the Care Dependency Grant.
There are also grants that people can qualify for that act as a supplement to other grants. These include the Child Support Top Up Grant, which guardians of orphaned children can apply for, and the Grant-in-Aid, which can be taken out by Sassa beneficiaries who cannot care for themselves and need to be able to pay someone to care for them.
In the wake of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020, the South African government introduced an additional temporary R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant option in an attempt to provide some financial relief to those who were most affected by the pandemic. This grant option is set to stop in March of 2024.
October Grant Payment Dates
Sassa grant payments are released on specific days of each month. The schedule for the October release of the Disability, Child Support and Older Person’s Grant has already been set:
- Older Persons Grant - 3 October 2023
- Disability Grant - 4 October 2023
- Children's Grants - 5 October 2023
Here Are The SRD Grant Payment Dates For October 2023
In October 2023, SRD grants will be paid from 25 October. The final SRD grant payments for October will be processed by Sassa by 31 October 2023.
SRD grant beneficiaries are encouraged to complete a SRD Sassa status check during payment week. This will allow them to see the exact day that the grant will be reflected in their bank account.
During that week clients are encouraged to view their status on the SRD website for the exact date that payment will reflect in their bank account.
It's important to note that R350 grants will take approximately 2-3 working days to reflect in the SRD grant beneficiaries’ bank account after the payment is processed by Sassa.
Where To Collect Your Grant
Grant payments can be collected in the following ways:
- For South African beneficiaries, permanent grants can be automatically transferred to your bank account if you register your bank details by filling in Sassa’s Annexure C/ bank form. For the temporary SRD grant to be transferred into your account, beneficiaries are urged to add their details through the online application.
- Grants can also be collected in person at a selection of retail stores and post office branches.
Sassa beneficiaries must be sure to take note of the above dates so that they know when they can collect their grants.
