Thousands of Grade 12 learners are awaiting the release of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. More than 800,000 candidates participated in the 2024 NSC exams which commenced on 21 October 2024.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) confirmed that results will be announced by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube on Monday, 13 January 2025. Matric learners who participated in the 2024 Matric exams will receive their results on Tuesday, 14 January 2025.

However, a lot of work is done before the release of the matric results

During a recent press conference, Minister Gwarube acknowledged that the administration of matric exams is a major logistical undertaking.

This was a massive logistical undertaking. I commend the efforts of learners, educators and administrators for their hard work.

A total of 732,448 full-time candidates registered for the 2024 NSC exams, an increase of 8,400 compared to the previous year. 136 195 part-time candidates are registered to sit for various subjects this year. The examinations will take place in 6,909 centres across the nine provinces.

To accommodate the high number of candidates, the DBE has appointed 55,053 markers stationed in 188 marking centres.

The DBE’s Matric Results Release Schedule indicated the important dates by which tasks in preparation for the release of the matric exams are completed.

Important Dates Before Matric Results Are Released

The DBE confirmed that matric exam scripts were marked and marks were captured in December 2024. Following the capturing of marks, several meetings took place regarding standardisation.

The Pre-standardisation meeting was held on 23 December 2024 with all Provincial Heads of Education Departments. Umalusi, the body responsible for maintaining exam standards, held its standardisation meeting on the same day.

What Is Matric Standardisation And Why It Is Important

The matric standardisation meeting takes place annually bringing together several stakeholders where marks and results are discussed.

Often, challenges experienced by learners and teachers will be considered along with other factors that may have impacted the grade 12 examination results.

The information gathered in this meeting is carefully considered, and marks obtained by learners will be adjusted where the stakeholders see fit.

Umalusi, the body responsible for ensuring that examinations are up to standard said ‘standardisation is used to mitigate the effect of factors other than the learners’ knowledge, abilities and aptitude on the learners’ performance.

The NEIC met on 28 December 2024 to address exam irregularities. This is aimed at upholding the credibility of the results.

Any decision regarding the standardisation of results will be announced to the public in January 2025. Minister Gwarube is set to announce the 2024 Matric Exam Results on 13 January 2025.

These are the important dates before matric results are released to candidates.
