Today marks the commencement of the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. A total of 732,448 full-time candidates registered for the 2024 NSC exams, an increase of 8,400 compared to 2023. 136 195 part-time candidates are also registered to sit for various subjects this year.
The matric exams, which will be written at more than 6,900 centres nationwide, are scheduled to run from today, 21 October 2024, until the final week of November.
Quality assurance body Umalusi gave the green light for examination bodies to manage the end-of-year matric exams. They confirmed that the system is ready to uphold the integrity and credibility of the examinations.

This year’s matric timetable has introduced several changes, including the early scheduling of Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT) practicals during the first week, as well as all official languages starting with Paper 3.
Minister Gwarube Confident Of Successful Matric Exams
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube expressed confidence in the system’s readiness for the 2024 NSC exams. This is despite concerns about security, transport, and the printing of exam papers which could undermine the Department of Basic Education’s efforts.

Key Dates for Matric Results
Once exams conclude in November, the focus will shift to the processing of results, with the final matric results expected to be announced by Minister Gwarube on Thursday, 15 January 2025. Matriculants will be able to collect their results the following day, Friday, 16 January 2025, from their schools or examination centres, or access them online.
