The fight over the publication of Matric results for the class of 2024 is going on - and getting more expensive. The Information Regulator is going to court to continue their fight to stop Matric results being published in newspapers.

For decades Matric learners have been able to view their final exam results in newspapers. This was usually showing the surname of each learner listed by school, and if they passed it would also show if they received a Bachelors pass.  Learners who didn't see their name knew that they had failed.

While most people will be happy with their results there will always be those who are unhappy - sometimes very disappointed. Knowing that your failure is public to anyone who buys a newspaper can only strengthen the distress.

To deal with this concern the Department of Basic Education has in recent years published only the student's exam number and result - not their name.

This concession hasn't been enough for the Information Regulator, an independent body that was set up by South African law which answers to the National Assembly of members of parliament.

The job of the Information Regulator is to ensure that private companies, and government bodies, take sufficient care of personal information and don't allow personal information to be publicly available. The ever-increasing crime of identity theft is just one of the problems they are trying to curtail.

First, the Information Regulator issued a ruling that the Department of Basic Education must not publish the Matric results in newspapers. The Department appealed the decision and wanted it to be heard in court.

The Regulator then issued a fine of R5 million to the Department for not following their ruling.

Matric Results 2024

In the latest move the Regulator is turning to the courts to rule that the results must not be published in newspapers.  The SABC reports that the case is expected to be heard on 7 January, only a week before the results should be published.

If matriculants can't find their results in newspapers there are a number of other ways to get their results.
