A Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a qualification meant to advance candidates who have already obtained a three-year Bachelor’s degree in Education.

The degree must have sufficient credits in an approved school subject. An additional requirement is that candidates specialize in teaching in the Senior and FET Phase(Grade 7 to 12 learner) 

Additionally, when can candidates attain this qualification they will be able to demonstrate the contextual role and skills of an effective teacher.

In order to enrol for this qualification, candidates must meet the following requirements:

A relevant B-degree (or equivalent qualification with at least 360 credits) with 2 school subjects on degree level. 
One subject must be on a 3rd-year level and the second subject on a 2nd-year level.
All students must do 40 days of school-based teaching practice in their period of study at a Faculty of Education approved school.

How to Apply:

  1. Go to: www.nwu.ac.za
  2. Navigate towards the “Study at NWU tab 
  3. Click on ‘Apply here’ when the dropdown menu opens 
  4. On the studies, page scroll down and click on post-graduates 
  5. Click on ‘Apply online’ and notice will pop up, click ‘ok’ 
  6. Download the undertaking PDF document and fill it out before applying (Its mandatory document) 
  7. Click on “New Application’ and click on ‘Create a university number’
  8. Complete the personal page by filling out your personal details
  9. Scroll down to the end of the screen and create a new password
  10. Confirm your password and click next to generate your university number
  11. Your student number and password will be sent to your address and phone number
  12. Open the new application page, Orange tabs will appear at the top which will turn green when completed.
  13. Select the qualification type (Undergraduate or Post)
  14. Complete the ‘School’, Biographical and Post School Information fields.
  15. The tabs will turn green as you fill out the rest of the details
  16. Select the ‘Electronic Document’ field and upload all your supporting documents.
  17. These include: Your Results, a copy of your ID and the undertaking document 
  18. Review all your information and click ‘Submit Application"
