University of the Witwatersrand, commonly known as Wits University, has been ranked the top university in Africa in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The university achieved an impressive global ranking of 200th out of 21,291 universities evaluated worldwide, placing it firmly within the top 1% of higher education institutions globally.
The achievement highlights Wits University's continued commitment to academic excellence, research innovation and producing graduates who are competitive in the global job market.
The recognition for Wits comes after the national focus has been on UCT, which has ranked number one in Africa in the rankings released by the Times Higher Education global list. In that list Wits has regularly been reported to be in the top three of African universities.
The different international ranking reports use different criteria, and weightings between those criteria, to give slightly different results.
Wits Recognised Among The World's Leading Universities
Reacting to the CWUR ranking, Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Zeblon Vilakazi, said the recognition reflects the university's growing global influence and impact.

Notwithstanding some of the misgivings around ranking systems, this ranking is important because it uses objective data to rank universities on education, research, faculty and the employability of graduates. Wits Leads In Innovation
The latest CWUR ranking follows another significant achievement for the university.
Wits was recently named the top-ranked university in sub-Saharan Africa for innovation performance in the 2025 Global Innovation Index published by the World Intellectual Property Organization.
The Global Innovation Index measures how effectively institutions and countries convert research, technology and knowledge into economic and social impact. The ranking places Wits at the forefront of innovation on the African continent.
How The CWUR Rankings Work
The Center for World University Rankings is regarded as one of the world's most objective university ranking systems.
Unlike many international rankings that rely heavily on surveys and information submitted by universities, CWUR evaluates institutions using measurable outcomes across four key categories:
- Quality of education
- Graduate employability
- Faculty excellence
- Research performance
This year's rankings were based on an analysis of more than 81 million data points collected from universities around the world.
Wits Graduates Among The Most Employable In The World
One of the university's strongest performances was in graduate employability.
“Wits performed exceptionally in areas that speak directly to real-world influence and graduate success. It is important that our graduates are employable - Wits achieved a remarkable Employability Rank of 97 globally, highlighting the calibre and competitiveness of Wits graduates in the international marketplace,” adds Vilakazi.
The university also achieved a Faculty Rank of 87 globally, highlighting the strength of its academic staff and researchers.
African Universities Competing On The Global Stage
The latest rankings demonstrate that African universities can successfully compete with leading institutions around the world while continuing to address local and continental challenges.
As well as Wits' position in the top 200, the CWUR ranking also show UCT at 276 and Stellenbosch University at 461. UKZN is just outside the top 500.
