The bursary administered by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a full-rounded bursary? If you're a student or future student of the North West University (NWU), you might be interested and want to know if they fund UP students.

The answer to your question is: yes, NSFAS funds NWU students. Now keep reading for more information.

The NSFAS bursary covers your tuition and registration fees along with NSFAS allowances for accommodation, transport, meals, books and other small expenses.

NSFAS does however have requirements for those wanting to be funded. It is as follows:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be attending or applying at one of South Africa's 26 Public Universities
  • Your combined household income must come to R350 000 or less per year
  • If you're a person living with a disability, your combined household income must come to R600 000 or less per year
  • You need to have passed Grade 12
  • If you're a SASSA beneficiary, you will immediately qualify for funding

It's also important to note that there is no age limit for NSFAS. They don't however fund postgraduate courses, only first degrees.

NSFAS applications open around August or September every year and close in November or December.

NSFAS provides for the underprivileged students in South Africa to ensure that if you qualify to study to get the opportunity, without having to deal with the stress of having to fund yourself.

Extra support is provided to students living with disabilities, such as:

  • Medical assessments: The assessment is limited to one assessment for the duration of the qualification and on request by the Disability Unit/Student Support
  • Assistive devices: Limited to one assistive device for the duration of the qualification.
  • Human support: To cover for the cost of human support such as a caregiver, guide-dog, scribe, tutor, or sign language interpreter.

The financial aid scheme supports access to, and success in, higher education and training for students from poor and working-class families who would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of studying at a TVET college or university.
