The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a very popular bursary in higher education as it is the government's offering to students from poor and working class backgrounds.

If you've been wondering whether they will pay your fees as a Varsity College or future Varsity College student, it's then important to remember which courses NSFAS funds.

NSFAS funds courses being done at one of South Africa's 26 Public Universities or 50 TVET Colleges. This means that unfortunately, NSFAS will not pay for Varsity College fees because it's a private college.

Varsity College is a private higher education situation which offers full-time, part-time and online courses. They offer Humanities & Social Sciences, IT, Education, Finance & Accounting, Law and Management courses.

NSFAS does not fund the following:

  • Private institution/college courses
  • Part-time courses
  • Short courses
  • Postgraduate courses
  • Second degrees

Varsity College does however offer some other scholarships, bursaries and financial aid to it's students.

The other options for you are to approach a bank for a student loan or go to the education loans specialist company, Fundi. Because they specialist in education loans they may be able to assist with the cost of tuition and the other costs involved in studying.

As for the NSFAS bursary, if Varsity College was only one of your study options and you had a University as an option as well, NSFAS will fund that course.

NSFAS funding covers tuition, registration, accommodation, meals, transport, books and other needs as well.
