The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical And Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges

NSFAS bursaries cover tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

Thousands of students apply for NSFAS funding annually. While many students believe they must have completed matric to qualify for NSFAS, this is not entirely the case.

Do You Need Matric To Benefit From NSFAS?

The majority of funding provided by NSFAS is for university students. It's important to note that these courses do require matric qualification for admission.

However, NSFAS also provides bursaries and loans to students enrolled in Ministerial approved courses at TVET Colleges.

Students should consult individual colleges for specific programme offerings. However, NSFAS generally funds the following programmes: Engineering Studies, including National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF levels 2-4 and Report 191 courses from N1 to N6, covering areas such as Engineering and Related Design, Electrical Infrastructure, Civil Engineering Construction, and Information Technology & Computer Science.

Business and Utility Studies are also funded, including National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF levels 2-4 and Report 191 N1 to N6, with fields like Management, Marketing, Finance, Office Administration, Economics & Accounting, Education & Development, Hospitality, Tourism, Safety in Society, and Transport & Logistics. Additionally, funding is provided for some Pre-Learning Programmes (PLP).

Several of these courses do not require a matric certificate as a prerequisite to entry. Therefore, several courses offered at TVET colleges are funded by NSFAS, even if learners do not have a matric qualification.
