The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) provides essential financial support to millions of vulnerable citizens with one mechanism being social grants. These grants include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Every year, there are two Sassa increases announced by the Finance Minister. This year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, announced that Sassa grant increases will be implemented on 1 April and 1 October.

We are sensitive to the increase in the cost of living for the nearly 19 million South Africans who rely on these grants to make ends meet. In this regard, we have done as much as the fiscal envelope allows.

This means that the next Sassa payment increase will occur on 1 October 2024. Here's a breakdown of the Sassa grant increases announced.

Sassa Grant Increase For 2024

The Finance Minister said that to keep up with inflation and increase access, Sassa grants will be increased. Godongwana announced the following Sassa grant increases:

Grant April Increase October Increase

Old Age (over 75 years old) R90 R10
Child Support R20 -
Disability R90 R10

These increased Sassa grant payments will come as a welcomed relief for millions of grant beneficiaries who rely on the money they receive to survive every month. Approximately 18 million people benefit from permanent grants and 9 million people benefit from the SRD grant, every month.
