Millions of South Africans receiving social grants from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will receive a higher grant payment in April 2024. The reason for the higher grant payment is that the new Sassa grant increases are finally in effect.

The increase in social grant amounts was announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana during his 2024 Budget Speech in February. All permanent Sassa grants, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Here’s How The Sassa Grant Value Increases

Older Persons, Disability, War Veterans, and Care Dependency Grants will see a total increase of R100. However, beneficiaries' social grants will only increase by R90 in April with the remaining R10 increase being implemented later in the year.

The Foster Child Grant will be increased by R50, taking the monthly amount to R1,180.

The Child Support Grant will see a R20 increase, bringing the monthly amount to R530. Beneficiaries receiving the Child Support Grant Top-Up will see a total of R780 per month (R530 + R250).

SRD Grant Increase Announced in March

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, also known as the R350 grant, will also be increased in April. This was made in a separate announcement by Minister Godongwana in March 2024.

Beneficiaries will now receive R370 per month, reflecting a R20 or 5.7% increase from the previous amount.

Here’s How Much Sassa Grants Will Be For April

  • Older Persons grant - R2,180
  • Older Persons (75 years and older) - R2,200
  • Disability grant - R2,180
  • War Veterans grant - R2,200
  • Child Support grant - R530
  • Child Support grant (Top-up) - R530 + R250
  • Care Dependency grant - R2,180
  • Foster Care grant - R1,180
  • SRD Grant - R370

These increased Sassa grant payments will come as a welcomed relief for millions of grant beneficiaries who rely on the money they receive to survive every month. Approximately 18 million people benefit from permanent grants and 9 million people benefit from the SRD grant, every month.
