The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will pay grants to more than 18 million people during this week. The agency has begun its disbursement of permanent social grants.
Sassa distributes several different permanent grants aimed at assisting financially vulnerable people living in South Africa. Permanent grants distributed by Sassa include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
In South Africa's 2024 budget, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced increases to all regular Sassa permanent grants. The first part of these increases will begin to be implemented in April, meaning that beneficiaries will receive increased grant payments.

SRD Grant Increase
In March 2024, Minister Godongwana announced an increase for the SRD grant. Commonly referred to as the R350 grant due to its monetary value, the beneficiaries of the SRD grant will begin receiving R370 from 1 April 2024. This means the R350 grant is being increased by R20 or 5.7%.
Subject to the finalisation of the comprehensive social security, we will increase the R350 [grant] to R370 by the first of April this year.
Gondongwana described the increase as “the realisation of the basic rights of our people”.
The first R370 grant payment will be made later this month.
