UCT Medicine Requirements

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has been rated as the top university in Africa and South Africa and is also South Africa's oldest university. They offer many different courses in a range of fields with one field Medicine under their Faculty of Health Sciences.

UCT's medical school was established in 1912 and was the first medical school in sub-Saharan Africa. They are rated as one of the top 50 health sciences faculties worldwide by Times Higher Education.

UCT's medical school has 13 academic departments and their programmes include undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical services and research. Student need to meet both the university and faculty requirements in order to enter into postgraduate or undergraduate programmes

    UCT Medical School Entry Requirements

    APS Score For Medicine In South Africa - UCT

    One of the first things you have to confirm is the APS score for medicine at UCT. This is the first requirement you have to meet, but remember that because it is so competitive to get into medicine studies even if you reach the APS score for and other medicine requirements you can't be guaranteed a place. 

    Undergraduates:

    • APS (An Admission Point Score) score of 463/600
    • FPS (Faculty Point Score) score of 628/900
    • WPS score of 764 (628+135.6) for South African applicants only

    Postgraduates:

    •  Bachelor's degree with the appropriate subjects or other qualifications that could be considered to be equivalent.

    Honours:

    • Bachelor's degree with specific major subject

    Masters:

    • Master's degree is an Honours degree in the subject that the applicant wishes to pursue at Master's level.

    Doctorates:

    • Master's degree in a relevant discipline

    UCT's Department of Medicine is a large clinical department which plays a leading role in medical education and research, and provides clinical services to communities. If falls under the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCT. 

    The Department consists of 19 clinical divisions and 11 major research units. The clinical divisions are Acute General Medicine, Cardiology, Clinical Haematology, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Skills Centre, Dermatology, Emergency Unit, Endocrinology & Diabetology, Geriatric Medicine, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine, Lipidology, Medical Gastroenterology, Nephrology & Hypertension, Neurology, Pulmonology and Rheumatology.
