The University of Cape Town (UCT) offers courses under a number of faculties, ranging from Commerce to Humanities, to Science and so on. Among these faculties includes the Faculty of Law, which includes a number of designed degree packages to meet the prospective Law student’s needs depending on the type of qualification they look to attain.

A degree in the field of law does not necessarily require that the student go straight into Law. In fact, a range of Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree packages are designed such that Law students can enter into a variety of professions, such as becoming attorneys, advocates, social/environmental lawyers, policy advisors, lecturers, and so on.

At UCT, the following LLB degrees are on offer for students:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) LLB - For this degree, the undergraduate student would apply within either the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Commerce, with Law as one of their undergraduate majors. However, the law courses would only commence in the undergraduate’s second year of study, on the basis that they have passed their first year with at least 65% if in the Faculty of Humanities, and 63% if in the Faculty of Commerce. After the completion of their 3-year undergraduate BA degree, the student will then pursue a two-year LLB degree.
  • 4-year LLB - For this degree, the student will immediately enter into Law in their first-year without the foundation of a Commerce or Humanities degree. Students must be certain about entering this degree, as the lack of a foundational Commerce or Humanities degree for the Law student may minimize their career options.
  • 3-year Graduate LLB - Finally, this degree is for the student who has already pursued an undergraduate degree, but without Law as a major. Upon completion of their initial degree, they will then enter this 3-year Law degree.
