These individuals receive two SMS messages, with the second containing a link for facial recognition verification. The link remains valid for only 72 hours, raising concerns for those without immediate access to smartphones or internet connectivity.
Failure to complete the verification process within the 72-hour window results in the suspension of the grant.
Many beneficiaries of the Sassa Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant have been waiting longer than expected for their ID verification links. This new verification step is causing frustration, especially for those who depend on the grant for financial support.
I have been trying to verify my identity with Sassa for over a week now. Despite several requests and even obtaining a HANIS (Home Affairs National Identification System) report from Home Affairs, I have yet to receive a verification link. I sent a copy of my ID to Sassa, but there has been no response.
Sassa requires biometric verification for all SRD grant applicants who want to update their contact information or are suspected of fraud. However, the system seems to be having trouble verifying identities for people with older green ID books.
The photos on these IDs may not be clear enough for Sassa's new facial recognition software.
What to Do if You Haven't Received a Verification Link
- If you have a green ID book: Be aware that verification might take longer. Sassa still accepts green IDs, but they recommend applying for a smart ID card to improve your chances of successful verification.
- Apply for a Smart ID Card (optional but recommended): You can apply for a smart ID online or in person at a Home Affairs office. The application fee is R140 (free for first-time applicants at 16 years old). Be aware that Home Affairs is experiencing processing delays due to a high volume of applications.
