The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to provide temporary financial help to individuals and families facing hardship. The grant targets South African citizens, refugees, asylum seekers, and special permit holders between the ages of 18 and 60.

The SRD grant is there to assist those who have insufficient income, don't receive other social grants or unemployment insurance and lack financial support from elsewhere.

Up until April 2024, the Sassa SRD grant value stood at R350 per month. It was then announced that the SRD grant would be increased to R370 starting from April 2024.

There are two main ways to apply for the Sassa SRD grant: Online using the Sassa SRD website and on WhatsApp.

Should you have submitted an SRD grant application and were rejected, Sassa then allows you to submit an appeal which will then see them reconsider your R370 Sassa grant application. Once you submit a Sassa SRD appeal, it's encouraged that you regularly do a Sassa status check.

How To Check Your Sassa Appeal Status For R370 Grant

To check on your SRD grant status for your appeal, you need to have your ID number with you.

  1. Go to the Sassa Appeals Website to get information on your Sassa appeal status.
  2. Enter ID number
  3. Enter telephone number
  4. Track appeal

You can also call the Sassa Call Centre on their cellphone number which is 0800 601 011.

When Will I Know If My Sassa SRD Appeal Was Successful Or Not?

Feedback on your Sassa status check appeal from the Independent Tribunal For Social Assistance usually takes 60 to 90 days. The outcome of your appeal will be relayed through a confirmation message via SMS.

Processing times can vary depending on application and appeal volume and individual circumstances. Sassa recommends checking the application status online regularly for updates.

It's important to note that appeals must be submitted for each month your application was rejected, otherwise the original decision will stand. If you've already submitted an appeal, you don't need to submit another or contact the Sassa office.
