Millions of people are set to benefit from the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly referred to as the R370 grant in May. However, not everyone who applies for the grant will be successful.

If you want to check if your R370 grant application is successful, you need to conduct a Sassa status check. There are two ways to do this.

Completing a Sassa status check not only informs you of whether your grant application was approved or not, but it also indicates the next you may take to ensure you receive a R370 grant payment.

Online Sassa R370 Grant Status Check

Step 1: Head to the official Sassa SRD website.

Step 2: Find the "Application Status" section.

Step 3: Enter your South African ID number and the phone number you used when applying.

Step 4: Click "Check Status." You might receive a one-time security PIN (OTP) via SMS.

Step 5: Enter it to view your status.

Sassa Status Check Via Whatsapp

Step 1: Save the SASSA WhatsApp number (082 046 8553) to your contacts.

Step 2: Open WhatsApp and send a message to SASSA saying "Status" followed by your ID number

Step 3: SASSA will reply with your application details, including any payment dates (if applicable) and your eligibility status.

By following these steps, you can check your Sassa SRD grant status for May 2024 and understand the next steps. Remember, patience is key while your application is being processed.

This May 2024 update provides information on your Sassa grant application status, collection options for approved grants, and the appeals process for declined applications.

What Your Sassa Status Means

  • Pending: Be patient, applications are reviewed, and processing times vary.
  • Approved: You'll receive an SMS notification when your R370 grant is ready for collection at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, or Boxer stores. Alternatively, you can choose to have it deposited directly into your bank account (if you have one).
  • Declined: Don't be discouraged! You have the right to appeal the decision.

Who Qualifies For The SRD Grant

To qualify for the SRD grant in South Africa, applicants must meet the SRD grant eligibility criteria.

They must be citizens, residents, or special permit holders, but they shouldn't be receiving other government support in the form of UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries. Their bank account should have less than R624 to be eligible for the R350 grant.

Sassa conducts verification checks in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs for identity and citizenship checks and shares bank details with the Department of Treasury for income verification. Once satisfied with eligibility, Sassa proceeds with payments, and this verification process accounts for the end-of-month payment schedule.

If you meet this eligibility criterion but your SRD grant application was rejected, you can submit an appeal

Submitting A R370 Grant Appeal

Appeals must be submitted to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

It's important to note that R370 grant applicants must submit a separate appeal for each month their application was rejected.

The ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 60-90 days. White their decision is final, however, unsatisfied applicants can request a judicial review within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA decision.

Grant beneficiaries are advised to Only use official Sassa channels (website or WhatsApp) to check their status. Beware of fake websites offering status checks.

Another important thing beneficiaries must do is keep their contact details updated with SASSA to ensure they receive notifications about their grant.
