The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) online applications are open.
How to apply to study at Wits University
In order to apply online to Wits University, you will need the following:
- An email address
- A valid South African ID number
- If you are an international applicant, your passport number

Applicants are able to apply for a maximum of three programmes and are advised to apply for at least one programme in a less restricted faculty, such as Humanities, Commerce or Science, which will make them more likely to get accepted into the university.
A non-refundable application fee must be paid which will amount to R100 for South African citizens and R700 for foreign citizens. This fee must be paid before the closing date.
Once you have completed your application you will receive an email from the University which acknowledges receipt of your application. The acknowledgement letter will contain a person number (which will become your student number) and a reference person who students can contact for any queries they may have.
Students are able to check the status of their application on the student self-service portal https://self-service.wits.ac.za/.
Supporting documents may be uploaded to the student self-service portal after the application has been completed.
How To Upload Supporting Documents
- Go to https://self-service.wits.ac.za/
- Login with your person number and the first six digits of your ID
Current Matriculants must upload their final Grade 11 Results and those who have already Matriculants must upload certified copies of all of their matric certificates/foreign school leaving certificates.
Should your degree have additional selection requirements such as portfolio and essay submissions, auditions or NBTs, you will have to upload these additional documents as well.
Applicants who wish to change their programme choice can do so if the applications are still open for their new selection. They will have to fill out the Amendment Form in order to change their programme choice.
Current matric students may be made a provisional offer by Wits depending on their Grade 11 results. Firm offers for all applicants will only be confirmed after receiving their final matric results. Applicants may only accept one offer and will have to respond to the firm offer within three days to secure their place.
