Established in 2014, Sol Plaatje University (SPU) was the first new university to be established in post-apartheid South Africa. It is also the first university to be established in the Northern Cape.

Since its inception, the focus of the university's academic programmes has looked towards the unique needs, competence and characteristics of the Northern Cape region.

This has seen them develop four facilities, namely the School of Economic and Management Science, School of Education, School of Humanities and the School of Natural and Applied Sciences.
