Walter Sisulu Medical school was introduced to improve the quality of life of all people served as well as being a leader in Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Community-Based Education (CBE) and Community Partnerships in Africa. The Faculty of Health Sciences was established in 1985 with the introduction of the MBChB programme.
The faculty of health sciences offer various qualifications such as undergraduate diplomas, bachelor degrees, honours, postgraduate diplomas, masters, PhDs and MDs (Doctor of Medicine).
Walter Sisulu's Faculty of Health Sciences at WSU is the only Faculty of Health Sciences in Africa that is a member of the Training for Health Equity Network (THEnet). Walter Sisulu Medical School's headquarters is at the Mthatha Campus.

Limited bursaries are available to prospective medical students in need. The bursaries are offered based on merit from the Department of Health of each province. Application forms are available from Health Districts throughout the country.
Students need to register with the Walter Sisulu University and then they can apply online to the Walter Sisulu Medical School. Once you have applied you will be put on a shortlist. Your application will be reviewed and a final selection will be made. Student applications are evaluated due to the number of students who apply yearly.
