New and renovated buildings have been opened at Walter Sisulu University's (WSU) Mthatha campus in East London. Blade Nzimande, The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation officially opened these new and refurbished buildings on Friday last week.
This refurbishment project started in February 2022 and has finally been completed. This improvement includes new lecture halls, residential buildings and other learning places.
These buildings have been described as containing ultra modern lecture halls that have been fitted with the latest technology.
East Teaching Mall at the Nelson Mandela Drive (NMD) site lecture halls will make use of the newest technologies to enhance teaching and learning experiences. These lecture rooms will have smart boards and wireless connections to improve teaching and promote better learning.
The lecture halls at these newly renovated buildings have also been designed to accommodate students with disabilities, and two lecture halls can accommodate lecturers with disabilities.
The refurbishment of the infrastructure was done and concluded to restore the dignity of all WSU students, as the spaces in which they were previously taught in were not giving them the dignity they deserve.
The official opening of these buildings took place on Friday, 21 April 2023, where members of the media were invited to join the Minister, along with the Eastern Cape Premier and WSU Vice-Chancellor and Chairperson.
Since 2015/16, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has contributed almost R600 million towards various capacity development programmes at WSU.
Additionally, the Department also plans on contributing 3,200 beds across all campuses in an effort to restore dignity to WSU students.
