Applying for funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) can be an essential step for many South African students in securing financial support for their higher education journey. While applying for NSFAS, you might see a 'Awaiting Academic Eligibility' NSFAS status.
In this article, we dive into what the 'Awaiting Academic Eligibility' NSFAS status means and what steps you need to take.
'Awaiting Academic Eligibility' NSFAS Status Meaning
After you've applied for NSFAS and check your NSFAS status on the myNSFAS status, if you see the 'Awaiting Academic Eligibility' NSFAS status, this means that NSFAS is evaluating your academic eligibility criteria and checking if you meet the academic requirements to receive funding from NSFAS.
During this step, NSFAS is also checking whether your funding is impacted by the N+ Rule. The N+1 Rule applies to all students who receive financial aid from NSFAS.
“N” is minimum number of years allocated to complete a qualification (i.e. record time). The “+1” refers to the extra year that a student may need to complete the qualification (making the maximum time).
NSFAS has previously clarified that the N+1 rule refers to all the years that a student has been registered for tertiary study at any public university in South Africa, and not based on whether the student was funded by NSFAS or not.
Applicants are urged to continuously check their NSFAS status to keep up-to-date with the progress of their NSFAS application.
