The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) 2026 applications are only open for 1 last day. This is the only application period for the NSFAS 2026 bursary funding.
NSFAS confirmed that 2026 applications will close on 15 November 2025.
Why You Should Apply For NSFAS
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges.
This funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
The funding provided by NSFAS ensures that students from poor and working-class backgrounds can obtain a tertiary education qualification without facing several financial barriers.
Who Can Apply For NSFAS Funding
All South African citizens and permanent residents can apply for NSFAS funding. However, specific income thresholds and academic requirements must be met.
Individuals applying for a NSFAS bursary must have a combined household income not exceeding R350 000 per annum before deductions. Individuals living with disabilities can have a household income of up to R600,000 for a NSFAS bursary.
Students can have a combined household income over R350 000 and below R600 000 and qualify for the NSFAS loan.
Beneficiaries of South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grants automatically qualify for NSFAS Funding.
How To Apply For NSFAS
- Create a myNSFAS account: Visit the NSFAS website and create an account.
- Complete the application form: Fill in all required information, including personal details, contact information, academic history, and financial information.
- Upload supporting documents.
- Submit your application.
After applying, it is important to check your NSFAS status regularly. To do this, visit myNSFAS and log in.
Once logged in, select the "Track Funding Progress" option. Your NSFAS application status will then be displayed on the screen.
After submitting your application, NSFAS will conduct eligibility checks to confirm whether you qualify for funding. Applicants not meeting the NSFAS bursary household income threshold will automatically be considered for an NSFAS student loan.
Applicants receiving Sassa grants receive immediate funding decisions.
Once a funding decision has been finalised, you will either:
- Be approved for funding,
- Be asked to upload supporting documents, or
- Be declined.
If your application is rejected, you can submit a NSFAS Appeal.
