When considering whether you will be embarking on a tertiary education journey one key factor that may arise is how you will be funding your studies. Tertiary education comes at a high price so bursary schemes such as the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, known as NSFAS takes care of this so students may pursue a qualification without the financial burden.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a government bursary that is available to underprivileged South African students who are looking to study at a public university or TVET College.
They provide funding for registration, tuition and allowances. These allowances cover transport, living expenses and learning materials.
So do they fund students at the University of Venda (Univen)?
You’d be pleased to find out that they do in fact fund Univen students.
NSFAS Funded students will receive the following:
- Once off book allowance for textbooks and other learning materials (usually up to R5200 per year)
- Meal allowance (usually R15 000 paid over 10 months)
- Travel allowance for students staying at home (usually R7500 paid over 10 months)
- Accommodation allowance, for students staying at UJ Privately Owned Student Accommodation. (usually up to R40 000 paid over 10 months)
The amounts of these allowances are to be confirmed by the university.
The requirements to be funded by NSFAS are as follows:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must be accepted or applying to a Public South African University
- SASSA grant beneficiaries are immediately accepted
- Household income must come to below R350 000 per year
- People with disabilities need to have a household income which comes to below R600 000 per year
NSFAS applications usually open in August or September every year for University students.
