The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) have signed a new strategic partnership aimed at empowering young people across South Africa. This collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), will combine resources to increase access to higher education, particularly for students from rural areas, townships, and informal settlements.

NYDA Executive Chairperson, Dr Sunshine Myende, explained that the partnership responds directly to the skills gap and ongoing inequalities facing the country’s youth. “Data from the NYDA’s Jobs Programme highlight that the majority of young people reside in rural areas and many do not possess a matric qualification. In response, the NYDA has initiated this partnership with NSFAS to align efforts, combine resources, and redirect young people toward opportunities in institutions of higher learning,” Myende said.

Key Focus Areas of the Partnership

  • Decentralised Access: NSFAS will use NYDA’s extensive national footprint to bring services closer to students. NYDA offices in rural and township areas will serve as walk-in centres for NSFAS applications, making funding support more accessible.
  • Bridging the Digital Divide: To improve online accessibility, the partnership will explore agreements with telecommunications providers to ensure reliable digital application processes, even in remote areas.
  • Expanding Educational Pathways: The collaboration will place a stronger emphasis on promoting TVET Colleges as a viable option for students, helping to create a skilled and diverse workforce for South Africa.
  • Addressing Student Accommodation: NYDA and NSFAS will work together to develop sustainable solutions for the ongoing student accommodation shortage, with NYDA contributing to policy development in this space.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Dr Myende stressed that the partnership reflects the NYDA Board’s focus on ensuring inclusivity and equity in youth services. By joining forces with NSFAS, he said, the agencies aim to extend financial aid, support, and education access well beyond urban centres, ensuring that opportunities “reach every young person, no matter where they live.”

He added: “This partnership marks a pivotal moment in building a more inclusive and prosperous future for all South African youth. This MOU is more than a formal agreement; it is a commitment to ensuring that no young person is left behind, regardless of their location. Through this collaboration, we are opening doors not just to funding, but to opportunity, development, and ultimately dignity.”

The NYDA reaffirmed its long-term commitment to creating a South Africa where every young person has the chance to thrive. The partnership with NSFAS has been described as a cornerstone of “our strategic mission to foster holistic youth development.”

This partnership is expected to make funding and development opportunities more accessible, helping thousands of young South Africans to achieve their educational and career goals.
