Nsfas funds students and prospective students who wish to study any of South Africa's public Universities or TVET Colleges.

Aside from covering tuition and registration fees, Nsfas also covers housing costs for students, meals, transportation, textbook and living allowances.

The bursary covers a wide range of courses, however, there are also a number of courses that are not funded.

Courses that Nsfas does not fund, include:

  • Postgraduate qualifications
  • Part-time studies
  • Private institution courses
  • A second undergraduate qualification
  • Short courses

Applications for NSFAS funding should be made online on the MyNsfas website. Many students have raised questions as to why their Nsfas application is showing the “qualification error” code.

According to Nsfas, all qualification code errors must be forwarded to institutions to sort out. Institutions will then address it with the Department of Higher Education and Training.

It is important to note that the bursary scheme only funds qualifications as per the information received from the department.

Nsfas has advised applicants who receive the “qualification error code” to go to the institution’s financial aid office, raise the issue and the institution will then liaise with the department for this issue to be resolved.
