The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial assistance to eligible South African students pursuing higher education. This support includes coverage for tuition fees and various allowances to help with living and academic expenses.
Understanding which allowances are included in NSFAS loans for the 2025 academic year is crucial for prospective and current students.
NSFAS has released the NSFAS Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for the NSFAS Student Loan Scheme for the 2025 academic year. With this, they have confirmed which allowances students who benefit from a NSFAS loan will receive.
What The NSFAS Loan Will Cover In 2025
Tuition Fees & Registration
NSFAS loans cover the full cost of tuition for eligible students enrolled in public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. Students will also have their registration fee covered by the NSFAS loan.
"Loans may be allocated to cover study-related expenses, including course/tuition fees, accommodation, and learning materials," said NSFAS.
NSFAS Allowances
NSFAS has confirmed that the following allowances will be included in the NSFAS loan:
- Accommodation
- Learning materials
The financial aid scheme has said that the NSFAS loan won't cover transport costs for students.
The loan provided will cover tuition, books, and accommodation allowances only. Transport allowance is not provided for as part of the loan funding.
These allowances are designed to provide comprehensive support, enabling students to pursue their academic goals without undue financial stress. Students are encouraged to maintain satisfactory academic progress to ensure that their funding remains in place.
