The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has released the Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for the NSFAS Student Loan Scheme. This includes information on allowances and in particular, the transport allowance.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving students enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. NSFAS funding covers tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.
The NSFAS allowances ensure that students don’t have to worry about all the extra expenses that come with getting a degree.
However, not all the NSFAS allowances provided to students who receive the NSFAS bursary will be extended to the NSFAS loan recipients.
Will The NSFAS Loan Cover Transport?
The NSFAS loan is aimed at students who do not meet the financial requirements for the NSFAS bursary. However, the loan includes similar support to what is given to students who qualify for the NSFAS bursary.
NSFAS loans are designed to assist eligible students with the core costs of their studies. This includes tuition fee, learning materials and an accommodation allowance.
It's important to note that transportation costs are not covered by the NSFAS loan.
The loan provided will cover tuition, books, and accommodation allowances only. Transport allowance is not provided for as part of the loan funding.
Students will therefore be responsible for covering their own transportation expenses, including travel to and from the institution and any travel required for academic purposes.
