The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is now paying Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants to approved beneficiaries for May 2024.

Now, Sassa has confirmed that approved applicants will start receiving their grants between 27 May and 31 May 2024. The payment of SRD grants will come as welcomed news for the millions of financially vulnerable adults who depend on this vital support.

Payments (for clients who are approved for May 2024) will be processed from 27-31 May 2024.

SRD grant payments come after Sassa completed beneficiary verification checks for the millions of people who applied for the SRD grant. Those who met all the eligibility criteria for the SRD grant will be paid this week.

While payments are being processed, beneficiaries should be aware that it might take an additional two to three business days for the money to reflect in their bank accounts.

Funds will take about 2-3 working days to reflect in the client’s account after payment has been processed.

Check Your Status for Specific Dates

Sassa encourages everyone who applied for the SRD grant to check their application status on the official Sassa website. This will give them the exact date they can expect the funds to appear in their accounts.

Ensuring Uninterrupted SRD Grant Payments

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu previously announced the implementation of Section 6C of the Social Assistance Act. This section serves as a temporary measure to bridge the gap to a new system, guaranteeing continued payments to existing beneficiaries until May 2024.

To avoid any disruptions in receiving their grants, Sassa will be utilising assessment data from March 2024 to determine eligibility for May payments. This means that individuals who were approved in March can expect to receive their increased R370 grant in May.

To ensure uninterrupted assessments and payments made during the transition between the Regulations published on 29 March 2023 under Notice No: and these Amendment Regulations, the Agency may use data used during the March 2024 assessment cycle, in terms of regulation 2, for continued assessments of clients up to 31 May 2024

This decision by Sassa is crucial in ensuring a smooth transition and continued financial support for those who qualify for the SRD grant.

Increased Grant Amount and Payment Dates

Back in March, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed an increase in the SRD grant, bumping it from R350 to R370. May will be the second month that beneficiaries will benefit from the increased SRD grant payment.
