The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that 2024 Matric exams will start on Monday, 21 October 2024 and conclude in late November. This means that the 2024 final matric exams are now only 41 days away!

Work is now underway to prepare for the matric examination period as the department finalises the number of candidates sitting to write to prepare scripts and question papers.

Spokesperson for the DBE, Elijah Mhlanga, said:

In fact, the actual preparation begins in January when the schools open because by February, March, that's when we get to register those that are in matric to see how many there are and then school continues.

As preparations are underway, the department has to also ensure that the safety and security of exam centres and exam papers and scripts are secure as there have been incidents with leaks and lost papers in previous years.

Mhlanga says another aspect to consider when preparing for the major exams are learner readiness as school violence could disrupt and impact learners and their exams.

"There's a lot that goes into it," says the Spokesperson.
