The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides funding to students coming from poor and working class backgrounds in the form of NSFAS bursaries and student loans. NSFAS 2024 applications recently closed with students rushing to get their funding sorted.

2024 NSFAS applications opened on 21 November 2023 and closed on 28 February 2024 with almost 2 million NSFAS applications received for 2024 NSFAS bursaries.

Many students have said that their NSFAS status is stuck on 'Application in Progress' and 'Awaiting Evaluation' and when asking NSFAS for updates, this is what the financial aid scheme said:

Please note funding is currently being finalized. Continue to monitor the portal for updates.

NSFAS has said that "the funded list is to be updated regularly".

Should students have submitted a NSFAS appeal and are confused by their NSFAS status, NSFAS has explained that they are currently processing appeals and that students should continue to check their NSFAS appeal status on the myNSFAS portal.

How To Check Your NSFAS Status

Here is how to do a NSFAS status check for your application status.

  1. Log in to your NSFAS account on the myNSFAS student portal here

  2. Enter your username and password and sign in

  3. Click on Track Funding Progress

  4. You will then be able to track funding progress and check your NSFAS status

Once there, there are a number of results you might receive when doing a NSFAS status check while applying for NSFAS funding.

If there is any information missing you will need to submit your supporting documents.

What An 'Application In Progress' NSFAS Status Means

An 'Application in Progress' NSFAS status means that your application is being reviewed by the NSFAS staff.

What An 'Awaiting Evaluation' NSFAS Status Means

If you NSFAS status says Awaiting Evaluation it simply means that you will have to wait a bit longer as they are still verifying your documents and information before they can make a decisions.

If you find that your NSFAS status is stuck on this step, it could mean that you have missing documents.

Students should continue to monitor their myNSFAS account and check MyNSFAS for the outcome of their NSFAS application. Students should make sure they have the correct details on the MyNsfas account so that NSFAS can contact them.
