If you are among those who have successfully applied for a Nsfas bursary, it’s important to check your current Nsfas status and what it means. Here's what an 'evaluation' Nsfas status means.

Awaiting Evaluation NSFAS

So you've submitted your NSFAS application on myNSFAS for a NSFAS bursary and you're checking your NSFAS status. Here's what it means.

If you receive an 'Evaluation' NSFAS status, there’s no need for you to be worried as this means that NSFAS is verifying all of the documents you have submitted during your application.

If you find that your NSFAS status is stuck on this step, it could mean that you have missing documents.

Awaiting Evaluation Meaning

Should you have been rejected and appealed and see this NSFAS status, it then means that your appeal has been processed and that NSFAS is evaluating your application to see if you qualify with NSFAS saying:

Continue to monitor the myNSFAS portal for appeal updates.

Prospective students are advised to constantly check out the status of their NSFAS applications, especially as TVET colleges and universities are soon opening.

NSFAS does not have a timeframe when it comes to one’s application status updating.

If you aren't sure of the awaiting evaluation meaning the good news is that it means just what it says. There can be a delay when the bulk of applications have been made and there is a period of time when you will unfortunately just have to wait for your application to be checked.

The important thing is not to wait to apply for the university or TVET College that you are interested in. As long as that application is in on time, your NSFAS evaluation should also have been completed by the time you need to complete your registration. So although NSFAS awaiting evaluation is not what you want to see, it will pass eventually.

How Do I Check my NSFAS Status?

  1. Log in to the MyNSFAS student portal at the official NSFAS website.
  2. Input your username, password, and click on SIGN IN.
  3. Search for Track Funding Progress and click on it.

What Does Awaiting Evaluation Mean In NSFAS?

If you NSFAS status says Awaiting Evaluation it simply means that you will have to wait a bit longer as they are still verifying your documents and information before they can make a decisions.

NSFAS provides bursaries to individuals who plan on studying or are applying to study at one of South Africa's 26 Public Universities or 50 TVET Colleges.

NSFAS Awaiting Evaluation Meaning

NSFAS bursaries cover more than just your tuition fees. NSFAS will also cover your registration, accommodation, transport, books and other student needs.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a government loan and bursary fund for students through the NSFAS funding. NSFAS application and registration opens in the later part of the year for students with the NSFAS closing date usually being in the next calendar year.

Usually, students and future students will submit their NSFAS online application for a NSFAS bursary using myNSFAS.

What is NSFAS?

NSFAS is a South African government-funded program that provides financial assistance in the form of loans and bursaries to eligible South African students who are enrolled in tertiary education institutions. NSFAS aims to enable academically capable students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education and obtain a qualification.

NSFAS provides financial assistance to cover tuition fees, accommodation, and other related costs such as books, meals, and transport.

To be eligible for NSFAS funding, students need to meet certain criteria, including being South African citizens, coming from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, being enrolled or accepted at a public higher education institution, and meeting the academic requirements set by the institution. Students need to apply for NSFAS funding annually and provide relevant financial and academic information for consideration.

NSFAS plays an important role in promoting access to higher education for students who would otherwise not be able to afford it, and it is aimed at addressing financial barriers to education and promoting social mobility in South Africa.

So what are the NSFAS requirements?

The most important requirement is that your household income should come to R350 000 or less per year. This means that if you add up everyone’s salaries in your house for the year and it comes to over R350 000, you won’t qualify.

Under the mandate of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is the means through which the government bridges this gap by providing funding to this cohort of students.

However, there are certain limitations to which courses and course levels are considered eligible for funding by NSFAS. NSFAS doesn't fund postgraduate courses, second qualifications, part-time courses and short courses.

If you are attending an institution which isn't a public TVET college or university, you also won't qualify for NSFAS funding.
