On 1 April, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant was officially increased from R350 to R370. This comes after Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, announced that the SRD grant would be increased after first being introduced in 2020.

During an address in March, Godongwana announced:

Subject to the finalisation of the comprehensive social security, we will increase the R350 [grant] to R370 by the first of April this year.

The SRD grant distributed by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) was then increased by 5.7%, changing the R350 grant to the R370 grant, with an increase of R20.

This has lead to many SRD grant beneficiaries wondering whether they should reapply or register again for the SRD grant.

Should I Reapply For The SRD Grant?

This SRD grant increase has sent beneficiaries into somewhat of a whirl of confusion. However, it should be noted that existing SRD grant beneficiaries will not need to reapply or register again for the grant, after it's been increased.

Once an SRD grant application is approved, there is no need to reapply every month. The only instance where you would need to reapply for the SRD grant would be if your Sassa SRD grant appeal was rejected.

Sassa would then automatically evaluate every month whether you still qualify or not.

The agency conducts verification checks in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs for identity and citizenship checks and shares bank details with the Department of Treasury for income verification. Once satisfied with eligibility, Sassa proceeds with payments, and this verification process accounts for the end-of-month payment schedule.

How To Do A R370 Sassa Grant Status Check

  1. First, visit the SASSA SRD status website to find the SRD status check section.
  2. You will then be asked to fill in your ID number, as well as the cell phone number that you used when you submitted your grant application.
  3. Hereafter, you will be able to check the progress of your grant by doing a Sassa status check.
  4. For security you might receive a Sassa’s status pin. The Sassa status pin is just an added level of security. Enter the number reported in the Sassa status pin to access your final results.
