The Department of Basic Education (DBE) recently released the results of the May/June National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Senior Certificate (SC) exams. While many learners who participated in the mid-year exams are satisfied with their matric rewrite results, some learners may still want to improve their matric results.

Matric learners who are unsatisfied with the matric results they achieved during the May/June matric examinations can challenge their results. This can be done through the submission of a matric exam recheck or matric exam remark.

When Is The Deadline To Submit A Matric Exam Remark Or Recheck Application?

Applications for matric remarks and rechecks will close on 21 August 2023. This means that learners have little time left to submit a matric exam remark/recheck application.

What Is A Matric Exam Remark?

If a learner feels as if their assigned marks do not align with their actual performance in the examination, they can request a remark on their scripts. This will see a new matric exam marker appointed to remark on the learner’s original examination paper.

The goal of a matric exam remark is to provide a fresh perspective and potentially adjust the marks to better reflect the student's true abilities and performance in the examinations.

What Is A Matric Exam Recheck?

A Matric exam recheck involves a thorough review to confirm that all questions have been properly marked and that the marks have been accurately calculated.

The goal of a matric exam recheck is to ensure that no errors occurred during the initial making of exam scripts and ensure the learner has the correct marks.

Who Can Apply For A Matric Exam Remark/Recheck?

All learners who are unsatisfied with their matric exam results can apply a Matric Exam Remark or a Matric exam Recheck.

What Is The Cost Of A Matric Remark/Recheck?

The fee for a matric exam remark is R104 per subject. Learners must pay R25 for rechecking a subject.

How To Apply For A Matric Remark/Recheck?

Application forms can be obtained from the centre where the exam was written. This application can also be done online by following these steps:

Step 1: Visit The Government’s Official e-Services Portal

Step 2: Click on the education icon, which displays a graduation cap

Step 3: Select the Basic Education Option. This will cause several options to appear

Step 5: Fill out all the required fields in the online application and ensure all the information provided is correct.

Step 6: Once satisfied that all the information is correct, accept the terms and conditions by checking the designated box (√).

It's important to note that before applying online, learners can make a payment for the remark or recheck application. Their exam number must be used as their reference number when making the payment

Candidates are encouraged to keep a PDF copy of the proof of payment ready for uploading during the online application process.

Once all the necessary details are provided and the terms accepted, click the "SUBMIT" button to finalise your application.

Candidates also have the option of rewriting their exams.

Matric Exam Rewrites

Learners can also submit an application to rewrite their Matric exams.

Matric exam rewrites offer a chance for learners to improve their exam results by completely retaking the exams. If students are not satisfied with their 2023 May/June matric exam results, they can opt for a rewrite in the October/November 2023 session. Registration for the end of year matric exams is open until 21 August 2023.

Register For Matric Exam Rewrites

Matric candidates who want to rewrite their matric exams must register in person at their exam centre or nearest provincial education district  office. Online registration for matric exam rewrites are not available.

Its important to note that Senior Certificate matric candidates cannot apply for the October/November 2023 session and must wait for the May/June 2024 matric exams.

Registration for the 2024 May/June exams opens on 2 October 2023 and closes on 9 February 2024. Registration for the May/June 2024 matric exams can be done online or in person at a provincial education district office or at an examination centre they previously used.
