One of the grants provided by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. Millions of South Africans rely on the R370 Sassa grant to make ends meet.

With millions of hopeful South Africans applying for the SRD grant every month, it's expected that they would need to check their SRD status. Here's a guide on how to do a Sassa status check for the R370 grant for January 2025.

How to Check Your Sassa Status

  1. Visit the official Sassa SRD website.
  2. Access the "Application Status" section.
  3. Enter your ID number and cellphone number.
  4. Verify your identity with an OTP.
  5. Check your application status.

SRD Grant Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the SRD grant, you must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or special permit holder. You cannot receive other government support like Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits or NSFAS funding and must have a bank balance below R624.

The SRD grant was introduced in 2020 as a temporary response to assist unemployed individuals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sassa SRD Grant Appeals

If your SRD grant application is rejected, you have the right to appeal. Separate appeals are required for each rejected month to the ITSAA. The process can take 60-90 days, and the ITSAA's decision is final.

If your appeal is successful, you will receive an SMS notification. If you do not receive an SMS, you are advised to check the status of your appeal after 90 days.
